Biblical Theology Symposium

April 13 & 14, 2012

The Consortium of Christian Study Centers held a Symposium on Biblical Hermeneutics featuring Westminster Theological Seminary professor Greg Beale and his new work A New Testament Biblical Theology: The Unfolding of the Old Testament in the New (Baker Academic, 2011). One of the Consortium’s goals is to provide opportunities for member staff and board members to gather together with premier scholars who can sharpen our minds in close conversation over a work of note, which they have produced. Dr. Beale is the author of several award-winning books in the field of Biblical studies including The Book of Revelation: A Commentary on the Greek Text in The New International Greek Testament Commentary (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1999) and the Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament (Baker Academic, 2007), which he edited with D.A. Carson. His Biblical Theology has already been scheduled for a close examination at next fall’s meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Chicago. It is a work of impressive scholarship that will serve us well as we attempt to stay aware of significant work going on in the field of Biblical hermeneutics.

This Symposium took place on April 13 & 14, 2012 and was co-sponsored by Park Street Church in Boston, MA. All meals, lodging, honoraria and other expenses were paid by the Consortium; participants incured only travel expenses to and from the Symposium. Each Study Center whose application for the Symposium was approved received one copy of A New Testament Biblical Theology: The Unfolding of the Old Testament in the New. The event was only open to Study Centers who were approved for membership in the Consortium and who paid the current year’s dues.

The entire Symposium took place at historic Park Street Church on the Boston Common in the center of Boston’s historic district. Lodging was within walking distance of the church. The Symposium began with lunch on Friday, April 13, and concluded with lunch on Saturday, April 14. We had two extensive guided discussions with Dr. Beale and ample time for informal conversation with other Study Center personnel. Dr. Beale also delivered a public lecture Friday night and an afternoon seminar on Saturday at Park Street Church.
