The Erasmus Institute aims to encourage and equip Christian scholars at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to display the lordship of Jesus Christ over all creation in and through their teaching, scholarship, creative work, intellectual engagement with colleagues, and any other academic or scholarly endeavor.  To this end, the Institute will work to develop a community of Christian scholars within the Five Colleges to provide teaching, integrate faith and scholarship, and to pursue any other activities which may further the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ by and among faculty within the Five Colleges.

Five Colleges, Incorporated is a nonprofit educational consortium established in 1965 to promote the broad educational and cultural objectives of its member institutions, which include four private, liberal arts colleges and the Amherst campus of the state university. The consortium is an outgrowth of a highly successful collaboration in the 1950s among Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which resulted in the founding of a fifth institution, Hampshire College, in 1970. Forms of cooperation include inter-campus transportation, joint academic departments, and shared resources and facilities.
