Movie Resources

Everything about movies is manipulative; when you walk into the theater you’re buying a ticket to manipulation!

Steven Spielberg, The Future of the Movies

It has become a commonplace in cultural discussion in the last half century to recognize the power of film as a significant shaper of American society and its values. This page offers some resources to help us think more wisely about the stories told on visual media and their themes, especially in the American movies we treasure so highly. The page contains a variety of links—sometimes to texts, sometimes to audio recordings—of some of the lectures and podcasts on movies by Drew Trotter, Executive Director of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers. Please let us know if you encounter any technical difficulties accessing any of this material.

Each year, Drew Trotter gives a talk on the Academy Award nominees for Best Picture, what those nominees reflect about our culture, and how Christians can think about and respond to those films. He presents this talk at Study Centers, churches, and other venues throughout the year. This lecture was delivered on March 1, 2019 at the Center for Christian Study in Charlottesville, VA.

You can access the link below either here on the website or download them to your device. To stream the audio form of the talk from the website, simply click on the link and select Play.

To download either file, right click (PC) or two-finger tap (Mac) on the link and choose “Download Linked File” (PC) or “Save Link As” (Mac) to your computer.
